HSTW and Middle Grades Assessments

High Schools That Work (HSTW), and Making Middle Grades Work (MMGW) are data-driven, research-based school improvement initiatives. Using assessment and survey tools, participating states, districts and schools can establish baseline data, identify areas for improvement and track progress over time.

The primary tools are the HSTW Assessment and the Middle Grades Assessment. These assessments, required in even-numbered years, include subject tests in reading, mathematics and science, coupled with student and teacher surveys. Schools receive comprehensive reports disaggregating student achievement by school and classroom experiences.
A HSTW Follow-Up Survey of Graduates provides schools with valuable information about how prepared their graduates were for post-high school pursuits. Schools that participated in the previous HSTW Assessment are asked to participate.  A survey of middle school principals is conducted in the spring of even-numbered years to gain information on the policies and practices of MMGW schools.
An optional Ninth-Grade Student Survey provides schools with critical information regarding students' first year in high school.
In addition, schools are required to complete an annual site progress report which provides a self-reported assessment of progress as well as data for national analysis.
