Description

This is the first of two sessions on Collins Writing.  Only participants from Year 1 should attend for more in-depth training.  Each participant will use the publications "Essential Conventions Check Mate" and Level C poster--a classroom guide for grammar conventions for use in grades 9-12.  Handbooks suggested are, "High School Writing Projects" and/or "Improving Writing Skills in Career and Technology High Schools Using the Collins Writing Program."  These materials can be ordered in advance from the presenter or through the Collins Education website.

Objectives

Participants will:

  • receive an overview of the Collins Writing Program (Types 1-5) with hings, tips and resources.
  • Reflect on Year One:  Q and A
  • Revisit FCA's, linking them to the rigor of the assignment (basic, proficient or advanced).
  • Learn about teaching students how to recognize and write their own FCA's, especially in high-stakes test questions.
  • receive strategies and ideas for two "Essential Writing Assignments"--Vocabulary Cards and Summarizing.
  • Set goals for implementation.
